Overview

Alexander is an experienced energy disputes lawyer, representing clients in large-scale disputes in the energy, construction and infrastructure sectors. His practice focuses in particular on complex international commercial arbitrations and investment treaty arbitrations. He also advises on public international law matters.

Alexander’s experience covers a wide variety of energy-related matters, including upstream and mid-stream oil and gas, renewable energy projects, and energy-related infrastructure and construction projects including offshore work. He has acted in arbitrations under most of the major arbitration rules (ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, SCC, SIAC, ICSID, etc), and subject to a variety of arbitral seats and governing laws. Alexander appears as advocate before arbitral tribunals and the English courts.

Alexander has been ranked as a Future Leader in Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration from 2017 – 2023, and has been recognised for international arbitration by Legal 500 (2018, 2020 – 2023) and Chambers (2019).

Acting for an independent oil and gas company in an LCIA arbitration worth over US$1 billion against a large international oil and gas company arising out of a shareholders’ agreement relating to an upstream oil and gas project in central Asia.

Acting for a Middle Eastern state in an ICC arbitration worth over US$30 billion against another state under international law, involving breaches of a pipeline treaty and treaty of friendship between the two states.

Acting for a central Asian state-owned oil and gas company in a US$500 million arbitration brought by a party to a PSC in relation to alleged breaches of the PSC.

Acting for a European contractor in a US$1.5 billion ICC arbitration against a subsidiary of a large oil and gas company relating to offshore construction work.

Acting for a contractor in relation to a dispute over a major offshore windfarm project.

Acting for a central Asian state and state-owned entity in relation to a dispute over a solar power project.

Acting for UAB E energija in an ICSID arbitration, and subsequent ICSID Annulment proceedings, against the Republic of Latvia. The dispute arose from the cancellation of a concession for the private operation of a centralised heating facility and electricity cogeneration project.
